N.O. Black Chorale's renewal a high note

John Ware waved his arms in the air in a conductor-like motion as he strutted from one side of the classroom to the other, carefully listening to the 22 voices that belted out "la-la-la-la-la" and the like.
It was the first time that the New Orleans Black Chorale practiced as a group since before Hurricane Katrina, and Ware, their conductor, was glad to have the members back. The chorale performs the music of African-American composers and is especially dedicated to the performance and preservation of American Negro spirituals.
But a cloud hung over the rehearsal Sept. 11 at the Xavier University College of Music.
Before the storm, there were 35 members. Regulars who didn't show up to rehearse for the group's upcoming annual Christmas concert are either still displaced by the hurricane or aren't coming back to live in the area.
Ware, also the director of the Xavier University Concert Choir, said the chorale needs more African-American males to sing tenor and bass parts.
"That's where our challenge is," he said. "We are giving ourselves another month to recruit and work and try to pull the program together, so that it can be something we are proud of and the audience will enjoy. We don't want to do a disservice to the music or ourselves."
The singers, African-Americans from all walks of life, belt out spirituals like "Swing Low Sweet Chariot," "There is a Balm in Gilead" and "Still Away to Jesus," as well as contemporary music like "A Child is in the Dark, Lord," composed by Richard Harrison for the group's 25th anniversary in 2005, and "A Call to Jubilee," written and arranged by Ware.
Chorale President Gloria Love, assistant professor of education and mathematics/computer science at Dillard University, is determined to make the Christmas concert a reality. She has been contacting members since right after Katrina....
